To celebrate National Walking Month, the Ulster Federation of Rambling Clubs (UFRC) is delivering ‘Walk with Us’, an initiative where walking clubs from all across Northern Ireland are opening their walks during the last two weeks in May to new members – and you’re invited!
Whether you want to start off with an easy stroll or join in with a more challenging mountain route, there’s a walking club for you. This event is perfect for those with some walking experience and a moderate level of fitness who want to enjoy the great outdoors with a walking club.

Mid Ulster Walking Club
- When: Sunday 24th May, 10am
- Where: Hares Castle (Mournes), Co, Down
- About the walk:
The walk meeting point will be Dunnywater on the Head Road. There is limited parking at these entrance gates to the water authority ground.
The walk will commence at 10am. We shall start our walk along the Tarmac road via Annalong wood which will take us to the location of the Binnion water tunnel and catchment area of particular interest.
The walk will then proceed to rougher and higher ground following the course of the Annalong river. This route will eventually bring us to Hares Castle with stunning views of the higher peaks of the Mourne mountains including Binnion, Rocky and Sleeve Donard summits. After a lunch break, we shall proceed to the famous Brandy pad then onto the col at the back of Slieve Donard at the Mourne wall. We will then follow the Mourne wall to the right, to lower ground passing near Rocky Mountain. Our return to Dunnywater will be to continue to the end of the Mourne wall, turning right unto a country lane and back to our starting point.
Distance, approx 14k with an accent of 1,500 feet.

Wee Binnian Walkers

- About the walk:
Our walk will feature Slieve Martin and the surrounding lower mountains of the Southern Mournes, such as Slieve Meen, Ballynagelty and Knockshee.
We welcome new walkers. It’s important to be reasonably fit, we ask visitors to cooperate with our Walk Leaders and accept their advice and instruction, but we do our best to assist. Note, there is a £5 car park charge levied by the Council who own Kilbroney Park.
Four graded Groups, A, B+, B and C:

- Grade A Very Strenuous Distance 15-18km, Ascent 1,000-1,300 metres.
- Grade B+ Strenuous Distance 12-15km, Ascent 800-950 metres.
- Grade B Strenuous Distance 12-15km, Ascent 700-800 metres.
- Grade C Moderate Distance 10-12km, Ascent 500-700 metres.
