Our Commitment to Safe and Enjoyable Walking

One of the UFRC main goals is to encourage more people to walk safely across the tremendous and varied landscapes of the north of Ireland.
We support our affiliated clubs through:

  • Subsidised training programmes in safety, navigation, and leadership
  • Indemnity insurance for clubs and members
  • Annual events designed to welcome new walkers
  • Spring and Autumn meetings featuring expert speakers, workshops, and opportunities for clubs to connect

Adding More Value for Our Clubs

The Federation, with the support of Sport NI, has been exploring new ways to strengthen the support we offer.
We are therefore delighted to announce a new partnership with OutdoorActive, a leading digital platform for walkers and hikers.

What OutdoorActive Offers

OutdoorActive enables users to:

  • Plan and track walking routes
  • Access maps across the UK, Ireland, Europe, and beyond
  • Explore routes shared by other walkers and organisations

The UFRC has negotiated annual discounts on OutdoorActive’s Pro and Pro+ subscriptions.
Their free tier also allows full participation for those who prefer not to upgrade.

UFRC Routes Now Available Online

One of the major benefits of this partnership is the ability for the UFRC to publish detailed, club‑tested walking routes directly on our website.

Each route includes:

  • Exact route mapping, encouraging people to keep to established paths minimising their impact on the landscape
  • Distance, effort level, and estimated completion time
  • Start and end points
  • Safety notes and considerations
  • Supporting photographs to help first‑time walkers

A selection of routes is already available under the OutdoorActive section of our website for you to view.

Call for Club Submissions

We aim to expand this collection significantly.
To do this, we invite all affiliated clubs to submit their favourite walking routes so they can be shared across the wider UFRC community.

This initiative will:

  • Make it easier for clubs and its members to explore new areas
  • Support individual walkers looking for fresh challenges
  • Strengthen connections across the north of Ireland’s walking community

Next Steps

More information will be shared at our Spring 2026 Meeting, where we will:

  • Answer questions about the OutdoorActive partnership
  • Greater clarification of the “Free”, “Pro” and “Pro +” tiers
  • Explain how clubs can submit routes
  • Outline the process for inclusion on the UFRC website
